Unless you expect the unexpected
you will never find the truth,
for it is hard to discover
and hard to attain.
Nature loves to hide.
This cryptic utterance carries a lot of meaning for me and I find the experience of deep observation, to be transformative. Giving attention to the natural world reveals many things, sometimes present, sometimes in the imagination. I try to bring those discoveries to my work.
Martin exhibits locally, for example at Surrey Artists’ Open Studios. He is not currently a member of an Art Group or Society.

As an artist, I want to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others about the beauty that I see in the world. I love to paint landscapes and townscapes, particularly scenes in my home county of Hampshire.
I am influenced greatly by artists such as Van Gogh, Kandinsky and Cezanne and use bold colours in my paintings, in the hope of capturing moods and emotions and also creating a sense of connection to a location.
I paint for the pure enjoyment of it and desire to share this joy with others.
My paintings are made by using a variety of mediums including acrylic, gouache, oil pastel, ink, collage and pencil.
I have exhibited paintings at Winchester Cathedral and also at the Business Design Centre, Islington, as winner of the Abstract and Experimental category for the Society for all Artists.

Based in Chalkhill Studio, Oliver's Battery, Winchester, Hampshire, Karen originally trained and worked as a nurse. She always painted in her spare time.
Karen achieved her lifetime dream when she had the opportunity to study Fine Art at Winchester School of Art and Design. She has exhibited throughout the UK and beyond. Her love for painting continues to develop and her work is often expressive, dreamlike and captures a sense of place. Karen enjoys working across media, especially cold wax medium. Her work uses colour, texture and form to capture semi-abstract landscapes and seascapes. The texture is created in layers and she experiments with many different mark-making tools. She explores painting from a deeper level, often relating to personal, visual experiences of her everyday life.
Karen’s painting has a more intuitive approach, which she develops through self-reflection and spending time walking her dogs. She works in sketchbooks on site and completes the paintings in her studio.
Karen has exhibited throughout the UK and beyond.
