With no encouragement to do art at school, despite winning first prize for my age group drawing the Black Horse for Lloyds Bank, I ended up in the City of London as an Investment Banker.
Going back to painting happened by accident, literally. A car accident forced me to stop horse riding and whilst recovering, I took up painting again, learning from various members of the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal Society of Arts.
Now my boys have flown the nest, that desire to paint has been unleashed. I have a love of portraiture, animals, birds and people but also explore abstract and landscape. Specialising in oils, I am driven by light and colour. The outdoors, particularly early mornings, the cool fresh air, gentle colours, rolling mists all provide inspiration for my work and the raw emotions that life presents are finding a release in abstract form.
Not currently a member of a Hampshire Art Society or Art Group, I have exhibited at The Titchfield Art and Craft Show.
‘I love Film Noir movies. This painting is completely character-driven and the narrative is so strong that it couldn’t survive without it, but I don’t mind that because the characters are so strong. All thanks go to my friends, who posed once again and put their all into it. The painting was a lot of fun and developed itself as it went along.
I got three quarters of the way through another version of this painting (all in black and white), before abandoning it and starting again, because the composition wasn’t working. The new design progressed so much better that I didn’t have to work very hard at all.’

“There is rarely any strong meaning or message behind my work – narrative takes a large role because I like the work to be emotive through what is being portrayed, but creativity is the driving force behind all of my paintings”
From 2008 to 2010 Will Rochfort worked as an Official Artist for the 2012 London Olympics, working with Olympic Gold Medalists, producing paintings in support of the Games and its associated charities.
As well as completing several portrait commissions, Will Rochfort is always searching for new ideas for paintings and usually finds this in books or cinema. With influences ranging from Degas to Rockwell, to the films of Steven Spielberg, it is narrative that really interests Will and he always aims to have a story within his work.
“I am a very visual painter and with the public being my target audience over the art establishment, I always aim to depict scenes that, through the characters portrayed, I hope people can relate to and enjoy”

"In February of 2020, I embarked on a journey to paint 100 portraits. The subjects were sent in through my followers on social media and I’m slowly working my way through the eclectic list of names, usually when I’m in between bigger projects. I’m pleased to share the collection on my website."
‘Friday Night Date’ is a particular personal favourite. It was so much fun to paint, from start to finish. The unlucky one in the centre who has been stood up on his date, is my good friend Matt Layzell who has posed for me many times. Also pictured is myself, Lucia Bifulco, my sister Beth, Laura Wells, Ruby Steel, Laurence Maule and Sam Crook.
Most of my works are set in the fifties and it was great getting everyone dressed up for this painting, let alone ‘faking’ their reactions to the film ‘Casablanca’.
