Animals are a great love of mine and I feel they are the best subject to be entrusted to capture. To me, there is no better feeling than giving someone a piece of art that moves them. Whether cherished pets that are still with you, or have sadly passed, I feel privileged to be able to capture them for you in a forever piece of artwork.
I work solely with coloured pencils because they produce beautifully soft, yet vibrant pieces as well as providing scope for fine details. I work hard to capture every single ounce of character I can see in a subject, giving the client a gift of a moment in time. I take pride in providing quality art at affordable prices, allowing everyone to be able to commemorate the animals that have shaped their lives.
When I’m not drawing, I enjoy taking my dogs on long walks in the beautiful New Forest where I live, which provides me with enormous creative inspiration as well as my daily wildlife fix. I’m also studying graphic design, fashion and textiles which fuels my love of creating and making.
I have been blown away by the attention my artwork has received and I am excited for all my future commissions. My portrait service is not limited to featured breeds and species, so whether it’s your beloved dog you’d like captured in coloured pencil, a guinea pig, snail or your adopted lemur, I’d love to hear from you!
Paper sizes range from 5" x7" to 8" x 10" giving you the choice of a range of sizes that best suits your needs and budget. If you would like a specific size however, please get in touch.
It’s not just pets and pencils here! I can also offer watercolour replicas of baby scans / ultrasounds. They make a perfect gift for new parents, grand parents, as a baby shower present or as a memorial for a baby sadly lost. Prices start from just £15 and I can recreate the scan in any colour you wish! Thank you for visiting.

Heavily textured painting depicting a dramatic golden sunset on the river Test in Hampshire. This painting incorporates my characteristic incorporation of reflective paints to capture the light, highlighted with applied golf leaf.

My work is principally focused on interpreting and expressing a sense of place. I seek to express the unique quality of places… landscapes, seascapes and townscapes.
I have studied and qualified in Fine Art, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design and I am a fellow of the Landscape Institute. I have always had a love of painting from the very earliest age. I have been fortunate in my career as a Landscape Architect to design and to have had built, four dimensional ‘ Big Art ‘ on a large scale, which have matured over time and have become memorable places, I hope.
There is great satisfaction in seeing people enjoying the environments that I have designed and I have gained a number of national design awards for my work. It is only relatively recently that painting has absorbed me once more and it feels like I have taken a long journey to return to a first love!

Had lunch in the Handlebar Cafe. Fabulous… check it out.
I find painting the most immediate and expressive of all artistic practices. I am drawn to painting mainly landscapes and seascapes, which I believe is rooted in my particular love and understanding of ‘landscape’ in it’s widest sense. In it’s essence, this is the connection between place and people, at a specific time to create a ‘genius loci’ or ‘sense of place’.
I particularly like to work with texture and often use pastes and sometimes apply gold leaf. I almost always use reflective paints in the work to capture and reflect the light. I will usually combine the use of palette knife and soften this with brush work. I remain inspired by the enduring impressionist masters: Turner, Klimt, Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Pissaro and also the more contemporary Landscape artists Mackintosh, Hitchens, Manrique, Heron, Rae, Iden … and I would describe my paintings as broadly impressionistic.
I am always very pleased to take commissions. If you have an idea in mind for a particular space then please just contact me at pauljbest@aol.com. I would really appreciate any feedback on my work. If you see a painting that you love then please do feel free to make an offer or to message me for any further information. I love to think that people enjoy having the paintings in their homes and this is a big part of the pleasure of offering the work for sale.

My early morning impression of the Estate of West Dean College in West Sussex.
The forest landscape here is splendid in the early morning misty light. In this painting, I have incorporated moss and leaves that I have collected from site and sealed into the gels and paints that I have used to add texture.
