A Perfect Line

‘This painting was completed for coursework, when I studied Illustration for a year at Kingston University in Surrey, UK. It was to illustrate a scene from Dylan Thomas’ ‘Under Milk Wood’. My Granddad posed as the vicar who has just thought of such a brilliant line in his poetry that he doesn’t look where he is dipping his pen.’

About The Artist

Born in 1985, Will Rochfort grew up in Lymington on the south coast of England and, apart from his time studying Illustration and Fine Art at Kingston University, he has lived there all his life. Since graduating in 2008 his focus has been primarily oil painting. Will’s main reason for becoming an artist is from a passion for creativity.

“There is rarely any strong meaning or message behind my work – narrative takes a large role because I like the work to be emotive through what is being portrayed, but creativity is the driving force behind all of my paintings”

From 2008 to 2010 Will Rochfort worked as an Official Artist for the 2012 London Olympics, working with Olympic Gold Medalists, producing paintings in support of the Games and its associated charities.

As well as completing several portrait commissions, Will Rochfort is always searching for new ideas for paintings and usually finds this in books or cinema. With influences ranging from Degas to Rockwell, to the films of Steven Spielberg, it is narrative that really interests Will and he always aims to have a story within his work.

“I am a very visual painter and with the public being my target audience over the art establishment, I always aim to depict scenes that, through the characters portrayed, I hope people can relate to and enjoy”

Too Few Role Models

‘This was the easiest of paintings in that it worked from start to finish. I took influence from Bill Watterson’s brilliant ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ series, where two characters play ‘war’ and when they have both been shot, the game is over.’

About The Artist

Jean M. Baylis (née Hearsey) born 1950 and educated in London, thoroughly enjoyed painting, with pictures exhibited whilst at school.

Although her heart was always in the countryside and painting, life took her away from that path for many years until fate took a hand. A move to Berkshire, where Jean found two wonderful horses and started long distance riding. A later move to the New Forest / East Dorset border with her family and horses, offered Jean many long hours out in all weathers, riding in the hidden depths of the countryside and over the spectacular Dorset coastline.

In such a natural environment, the artist in her suppressed all those years before, rose to the surface. She saw pictures everywhere she looked, in the dark skies over the sea, in the depths of the forest and in wonderful landscapes. The urge to paint could no longer be ignored. She studied Mixed Media & Visual Techniques City & Guilds at adult education and was referred to study Art & Design at the Art Institute, Bournemouth University, followed by traditional painting methods and life studies at The Prince’s Drawing School, Kensington Palace, London.

Landscape and marine subjects using oil or acrylic media are Jean’s favourite, but occasionally the use of mixed media comes to hand, or pastel, particularly for equestrian subjects. Jean enjoys the spontaneity of working en-plein air, painting what the landscape and weather offer and allowing the atmosphere and paint to create. Her journey of discovery in oil, acrylic, watercolour or pastel are also created at home in her farm studio overlooking grazing fields, on the border of the New Forest.

Art, like life, is a continual learning curve, over which we have no real control. Each mark, thought, word or line adds to, or deviates from the experience on the journey.

About The Artist

Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, however it is only in recent years that I have specialised in Animal Art, after retiring from teaching, where I held the position of Art co-ordinator.

My main work is creating pastel portraits from photographs of people’s cats, dogs and horses (or any other pet)! The aim of each portrait is to capture the true character, personality and expression of the pet, enabling people to enjoy and cherish them for a lifetime. The key to capturing your pet is through the eyes. When this is right, the rest follows.

I had the opportunity to go on Safari to Botswana and see the most magnificent animals, first hand, in their natural habitat; such a privilege! Since then I have developed a portfolio of wildlife Animal Art. For this I use Pastels and Graphite pencils, where very fine detail can be achieved.

Art Groups / Exhibitions

I am a member of the Ringwood Art Society, the Society of All Artists and the Society of Equestrian Artists. I have exhibited work locally, in London and in New York. I am also linked to the Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS). 20% goes to the WVS, when I sell a painting through their organisation.

I accept commissions and am happy to paint any animal. I feel very fortunate to finally be doing what I love.
